Love singing? So do we. Victoria Welsh Choir (VicWelsh for short) is always on the lookout for men who enjoy raising their voices in spine-tingling four-part harmony.
Since seven Welshmen founded us in 1980, we’ve grown into three thriving branches across Victoria: Melbourne, Bendigo and Ballarat. Our choristers range from their 20s to their 90s, hailing from Wales, England, Ireland, Scotland, Sri Lanka, Australia and beyond. What brings us together? A shared love of song, a bit of humour, and a commitment to keeping the Welsh choral tradition alive.
Whether you’re an experienced singer or someone who just enjoys belting out a tune in the car, we’d love to meet you.
Victoria Welsh Choir undertakes about fifteen performances a year in Melbourne and beyond, including:
The best way to find out if VicWelsh is for you is to turn up to a rehearsal. You’ll be warmly welcomed, and you can experience firsthand what it’s like to sing with a Welsh male choir.
No need to book. Just come along.

No experience? No problem.
You don’t need to read music or speak Welsh. Many of our choristers had never sung in a choir before joining. We’ll teach you everything you need to know, from reading your part to pronouncing Cymraeg.
All you need to bring is your voice and a willingness to give it a go.
Not at all. Many of our choristers learned by ear. We provide practice recordings through our Members Area where your part is highlighted, so you can learn at home on your phone or computer. You’ll pick up musical knowledge as you go.
Neither do most of us! At least 25% of our repertoire is sung in Welsh (it’s in our constitution), and we learn it phonetically. We hold weekly Welsh pronunciation classes, and we’ve been complimented on our pronunciation by audiences in Wales. You’ll be singing in Cymraeg before you know it.
There’s an annual membership fee. Contact the Secretary for current details.
You’ll also need to purchase a choir uniform (jacket, trousers and shirt) for concert performances. Occasionally there are travel costs when we head to interstate or overseas venues.
You’ll have a quick voice range check so we know which section suits you: First Tenor, Second Tenor, Baritone or Bass. Then you’ll join in with the rehearsal and discover the camaraderie that comes from singing together.
When you feel ready, you can ask for an audition. You’ll sing a piece of your choice alongside the section leaders to show you can hold your part. There’s no rush. Take your time.
Once you pass, you’ll receive your choir tie and badges and become a full member of Victoria Welsh Choir.
There’s nothing quite like the feeling of 60 voices in four-part harmony raising the roof. Our concerts are known for their professionalism, polish, and a good dash of humour.
Come and give us a try. You might just find your new favourite Monday, Wednesday or Thursday night.
