26th February. As usual we joined with the Welsh Church in
bringing out a guest conductor
from Wales, on this occasion bringing back Robert Nicholls for his fourth visit. Other guests were the ever-popular local

soloists were Stephen Lynn, Ed Hughes, Roger Bartlett, Stephen Pepper,
Bob Ash, Geoff Serpell and the Bendigo Balladeers (Wayne Blandford, Rob
Hopman, and Ken Simpson, plus Merle Hopman). Audience feedback
included:

- It was a wonderful night, extremely moving and emotional, fun and very entertaining. Amazing musicians in every way.
- It is amazing the variety of musical styles that the choir can
bring to the stage so each year is different and yet always enjoyable,
please keep it up. I found Rob Nichols a good conductor, but wish he had
sung more, what an incredible voice!! Well done everyone, good verve.
- A fine performance by the Victoria Welsh Choir. The whole night
was most entertaining because of the interesting variety of items. It
was a most thoughtful and well presented program.

Cymanfa Ganu
27 February 2011
On Sunday 27 February, the day after our annual St David's Day Concert,
we joined with other local Welsh choirs to participate in a Cymanfa Ganu
(hymn festival) organised by the Melbourne Welsh Church. Rob Nicholls,
the visiting conductor from Wales, encouraged an enthusiastic and
uplifting performance by the congregation, who, led by the choirs, sang a
dozen well known and rousing hymns in both Welsh and English. At two
points in the proceedings the congregation became an audience as the
choirs combined to perform three items they had prepared especially for
the occasion. These were
Finlandia (Be still, my soul), Pwy sydd ar du'r
Arglwydd (Who is on the Lord's side) and
Bryn Calfaria (Hill of Calvary
- also known as
Laudamus). In addition, the inimitable Huw Jones once
again delighted the congregation with his own improvisations of Welsh
and Australian tunes on the harp.
Yea
6th March 2011: "nothing but praise from everybody who was there"
Our first country concert for 2011 was on Sunday 6th March, in Yea,
where we previously appeared in
2001 and 2003. We presented a modified version of our "From Wales with
Love" concert from St David's Day, featuring Victoria Welsh Choir
Scholar Melinda Ash. Other soloists were Bob Ash (no relation), Stephen
Lynn, Roger Bartlett, Ambrose Morgan, Drew Hopkins, Ed Hughes, Geoff
Serpell and the "Bendigo Balladeers" (Rob Hopman, Ken Simpson and Wayne
Blandford).
Afterwards our client wrote:
"There was nothing but praise from everybody who was there. You were
all very well disciplined, and the singing and acoustics were superb.
That last number, the unaccompanied prayer (Sunset Poem), was a real
tear jerker. Thanks again, and we look forward to having you again one
day."

its first visit to Rye, eliciting an enthusiastic response from the
full house. Soloists were Bob Ash, Ambrose Morgan, Ed Hughes, Roger
Bartlett, Gordon Parsons, Drew Hopkins and Geoff Serpell.
After the concert the sun came out after a gloomy day, and choir and
audience alike enjoyed a sip of chardonnay and/or pinot noir from Whinstone Estate winery - a most civilised conclusion to the proceedings.

Such precision, concentration and passion we have never seen before. Alison
-
Brilliant! Loved every minute! Graeme and Margaret

Castlemaine Festival
3rd April 2011: "two wonderful performances"
On 3rd April we made our fourth visit in a decade
to Castlemaine, this time to take part in the Castlemaine Festival. We presented two performances:
- A wide repertoire of the choir's much-adored Welsh and English
choral tunes, opera choruses, spirituals and popular songs from
musicals. Soloists were Roger Bartlett, Ambrose Morgan, Drew Hopkins, Ed
Hughes and the Bendigo Balladeers (Wayne Blandford, Rob Hopman and Ken
Simpson, accompanied on recorder by Rob's wife Merle).
- Diary of a Welsh Swagman - a specially-created response to the
2011 Castlemaine Festival's focus on storytelling. Tenor Drew Hopkins
told the story of Joseph Jenkins, who carried his swag around northern
Victoria for 25 years in the late 19th century. The narrative was built
around extracts from his comprehensive and illuminating diaries, read by
Tony Davies, and punctuated by a selection of appropriate songs from
the choir. Soloists were Stephen Lynn, Gordon Parsons, Roger Bartlett,
Barry McMahon and Bob Ash.
Afterwards the organisers wrote "Congratulations on two wonderful performances on Sunday!"

5th June 2011: "great mix" "nothing needs improvement" "brought me to tears"
On 5th June Vic Welsh returned to Sandringham after
an interval of 15 years. Highlights included our première performance of the Beach Boys' 1963 hit In My Room, with a solo by second tenor Stephen Lynn, and the return to our active repertoire of Seventy Six Trombones from The Music Man - at what seemed like twice the former tempo! The audience joined us in singing the last chorus of Cwm Rhondda, "Songs of praises ..." so enthusiastically that we sang it four times, equalling our record! Audience comments included:
- A thoroughly enjoyable afternoon with plenty of variety. It was fun
to be asked to participate at times. Wonderful finale with the song
from Under Milk Wood*. Rosemary
- Brilliant – I love you all. Can’t pronounce all that long name**, but thanks. Blessing* brought me to tears. Marguerite

improvement. My father and his family are Welsh. Thank you for restoring

- Great choice of songs and a good mix. (Others said "a great mix" and "the right mix".)

And from two younger audience members:
- "Cool, great and the best kind of Welsh singing I’ve seen. (First time anyway)" Harry
- "The best choir I’ve heard. I could listen to you all day.

David Hobson with Vic Welsh
18th June 2011 at Melbourne Recital Centre
The excitement was palpable on Saturday 18 June
when a capacity audience made its way to the splendid Melbourne Recital Centre
for a gala night to hear the ever-popular David Hobson. Our usual accompanist
Lorna Ogilvie was stricken with the flu but we were lucky to secure the services
of the very able and experienced Jodie Lockyer.
As well as showcasing his
considerable talents and range in several languages in his extensive solo
brackets, David joined with the choir on several numbers.
In the first half,
he led the choir in a rousing rendition of Cwm Rhondda (Bread of
Heaven) and enraptured the audience with a wonderfully sensitive interpretation
of the lullaby Suo Gân, accompanied by Faleiry on harp. She also
accompanied him on Dafydd y Garreg Wen (David of the White Rock) and on
She moved through the Fair.
In the second half he gave a very
poignant interpretation of Goin’ Home, from Dvorak's From The New
World, and led a tremendously animated finale of Cherchez La Femme
from The Merry Widow, complete with the dinner-suited choristers waving
colourful champagne glasses around. It was a wonderful finish to a show which
confirmed David’s many talents and winning way with the audience.
By the
time it finished, everybody was on cloud nine and looking forward to the next
time. Judging by the comments afterwards in the bar, the concert was one of the
best we had ever staged and we were very pleased to discover patrons new to
David as well as to us.
Ballarat
24th July 2011
The historic Her Majesty’s Theatre in
Ballarat was the challenging venue for a Sunday afternoon concert on
24th July. Organised by the local Theatre Organ Society, each half of
the concert featured Howard Terrill who entertained the audience by
showcasing the Theatre’s organ’s capabilities across a range of musical
styles.
The choir filled the rest of the program with an even wider range of tunes – from The Anvil Chorus (complete with ‘theatrical’ blacksmith), through Stout-hearted Men, to Little Deuce Coupe.
The depth of talent in the choir’s ranks was ably demonstrated by solos
and duets featuring Roger Bartlett, Stephen Pepper, Bob Ash, Graeme
Sanderson, Graham Warner and Ed Hughes. Our mining bracket, with our
Bendigo Balladeers (Rob and Merle Hopman, Ken Griffin and Wayne
Blandford) singing Coal Dust Tattoo and Bob Ash with Working Man, was eerily and effectively enhanced by singing to a darkened auditorium which fittingly echoed the darkness of a coal mine.
